Who is the richest man of all times in the world? Is it Jeff Bezos? Is it Bill Gates? No you are wrong. The richest man of all times in the world is Mansa Musa. Who is Mansa Musa?

In 1280, Mansa Musa was born in Mali. He ruled from 1312 to 1337. His kingdom stretched from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to modern day Niger, taking in parts of what are now Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Ivory Coast. His empire was so big that it took a year to travel from one end to another.

During the reign of Mansa Musa, his empire accounted for almost half of the old World’s gold. Timbuktu city became important commercial city and teaching city. His wealth was achieved by trading gold and salt which were found in abundance in west Africa at the time.

Once Mansa Musa travelled to Mecca for piligrimage. 60000 men accompanied him. All the inhabitants including the slaves were wearing gold brocade and finest Persian silk. 100 camels were carrying hundreds of pounds of pure gold.

On his way, he stayed at Cairo for three months. He had given 50000 gold dinars to the sultan of Egypt as a first meeting gesture. He handed out so much gold in Cairo that the price of gold plummet in the region for 10 to 12 years, wrecking the economy.

Mansa Musa became so popular that he was drawn in 1375 Catalan Atlas.

The Atlas depicted Musa sitting on a throne with a gold sceptre and crown, holding a gold nugget.

Musa built a great number of mosques. There is a saying that he built one mosque every Friday of his reign. He also commissioned many universities. So how rich he was? After much calculation, it is said that his wealth was incalculable!
