Hello Friends!

Do you know how we started celebrating this day?

In 1930, Joyce Hall who was the co founder of Hallmark cards first started Friendship day. His intention was to celebrate it on 2nd August.
In Paraguay, Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho proposed the World Friendship Day concept on 20 July 1958.
But in 27th July 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared 30 July as "International Day of Friendship"

But various countries celebrate Friendship day on different days:

Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Uruguay: 20 July
Bolivia: 23 July
Colombia: Second Saturday of March
Ecuador, Mexico, Venezuela : 14 July
Estonia, Finland: 14 February
Bangladesh, Malaysia, India, Singapore, UAE :First Sunday of August
Nepal, Paraguay : 30 July
Pakistan: 19 July
United States: 15 February
Ukraine: 9 June
Peru: First Saturday in July

For many people it is a joyous day. In some countries’ friends exchange friendship bands, cards and gifts.

In 1998, Nane Annan (wife of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan) named Winnie the Pooh as the world's Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations to honour the friendship day.
But there are some sayings that the day is a ‘Marketing Gimmick’.

A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him I may think aloud. I am arrived at last in the presence of a man so real and equal, that I may drop even those undermost garments of dissimulation, courtesy, and second thought, which men never put off, and may deal with him with the simplicity and wholeness with which one chemical atom meets another.
