It is the largest lizard living on Earth today.

It grows up to 10 feet long and weighs 200 pounds or more.

Indonesian Island Komodo, Flores, Rinca and Gili Motang are home to these large lizards.

Komodo Dragons were discovered about 100 years ago but scientist thinks that they may have been around for millions of years.

There are parks for their protection and around 3000 Komodo dragons live there.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed it as vulnerable to extinction.

These species was originally from Australia.

These are extremely venomous. Their venomous bite delivers toxins and 50 types of bacterias. Bite inhibits blood clotting, cause shock from rapid blood loss and can cause death.

They have strategy for hunting:

To catch prey, they will try to match with the surrounding darts. Then they will lie and wait for prey. When they will see an animal passing, then will give venomous bite.

The Komodo dragons need protection from other Komodo dragons.

Bony deposits named osteoderms are found in their skins.

Komodo dragons are carnivores.

They have forked tongue like snakes and uses its tongue to detect a prey by smell. They can locate the prey that is 4 miles away.

These animals can eat 80% of their weight in one sitting.

They can survive eating one meal in a month.

These creatures are grave robbers.

Though they reproduce by sexual method, the female Komodo dragons can reproduce using parthenogenesis. They dig burrow as deep as 9 metres and lays 15-30 eggs. Eggs look like balloons filled with water. Baby lizards use "egg tooth" to crack the shell.

Larger members tries to eat younger members. So how young ones survive?

Young Komodo dragons spend time in trees. Also the young members roll in fecal material to get scent that the large members are programmed to avoid.

They hunt during day as they can’t see well in night. They have difficulty in hearing.

Komodo dragon can run 12 to 13 miles per hour.

They are great swimmers.

They are cold blooded and try to get heat from sun. During rainy season, they will hide in their burrows to prevent heat loss.

They have short legs, long tail and 60 teeth in their mouth. They use their tails for protection and prey.

They can live more than 30 years in the wild, but only few years in captivity.
